In the final weeks of his life, James Van Der Beek turned his attention to family.
The actor, best known for his role on “Dawson’s Creek,” died Wednesday after battling colorectal cancer, according to Page Six.
His wife, Kimberly, confirmed his death. He had been fighting the disease since August 2023.
On Jan. 25, Van Der Beek shared what would become his last Instagram post — a tribute marking the shared birthday of his daughter Annabel and his father, James.
The post included a photo of the actor dressed in a sweater and beanie, embracing Annabel as she hugged him tightly. A second image showed his father alongside Annabel.
In the caption, Van Der Beek reflected on the bond he saw between them.
“I can recognize the same open, warm, loving, gentle heart,” he wrote. “I see the care and dedication you shower upon those you love most. I see the same out-of-the-box Aquarian creativity and originality.”
He also praised the unique energy each brought into the lives of others.
“And you both make every room you’re in more fun,” he continued. “Different senes of humor, but you both have a way of alchemizing the vibe around you in such a subtle way one can almost miss how powerfully you do this.”
Van Der Beek expressed deep gratitude in the post.
“The world is a better place because the two of you are in it,” he wrote. “Happy birthday, guys. I love you with all my heart ❤️.”
After confirming his death, Kimberly described how he faced his illness in its final chapter.
She said he “met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”
“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come,” she wrote. “For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
