A startling moment unfolded at the White House when President Donald Trump openly described a life-threatening health scare involving a sitting congressman — and how it was reversed.

According to the New York Post, while speaking in the East Room, Trump recounted how Neal Dunn faced what was described as a dire heart condition.

“He would be dead by June,” Trump said, offering a blunt assessment of the situation as he understood it at the time.

The revelation appeared to catch Mike Johnson off guard. “OK, that wasn’t public, but, yeah, OK, it was grim,” Johnson responded, acknowledging the seriousness of Dunn’s condition.

The exchange came as Trump praised Johnson’s handling of the narrow Republican majority in the House, where every vote carries significant weight.

Trump noted how unexpected absences — including deaths or severe illness — can complicate leadership when margins are tight.

“Death is very bad when you’re the speaker, and you have a majority of two or three. But we had it, and then we had another death,” Trump said.

Initially avoiding naming the lawmaker, Trump said, “We had one man who was very ill. It looked like he wasn’t going to make it. I don’t know. I don’t I won’t mention his name.” Johnson then clarified that he was referring to Dunn, a 73-year-old representative from Florida.

Johnson elaborated on the situation, saying Dunn had been continuing to work despite a serious diagnosis.

“Congressman Dunn is a real champion and a patriot, because he’s still coming to work, and if others got this diagnosis, they would be apt to go home and retire,” he said.

When Trump pressed for details, Johnson replied, “I think it was a terminal diagnosis,” prompting Trump to reiterate the severity of the prognosis.

According to both men, Trump then intervened directly. Johnson explained that Trump called Dunn to offer encouragement and suggested bringing in White House medical staff. Within hours, Dunn was taken to Walter Reed for emergency surgery.

“[Johnson] called to say that he was terminal, really bad heart, there’s nothing they can do,” Trump said. “I said, ‘That’s bad.’ Number one, it was bad because I liked him. Number two, it was bad because I needed his vote.”

Trump described quickly mobilizing doctors. “I have doctors in the White House, and White House doctors are incredible… like, they’re miracle workers,” he said.

The procedure, Trump added, was extensive. “It was a long operation. They gave him more stents and more everything,” he said, claiming Dunn now has “a new lease on life.”

Trump concluded with a candid remark about his motivations: “I did it for him first and for the vote second, but it was a close second, actually.”

A spokeswoman for Dunn did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Florida lawmaker, a physician himself, previously announced he would retire rather than seek another term.
