WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 07: U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio look on following a closed door briefing with senators on the U.S. the capture of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, at the U.S. Capitol on January 7, 2026 in Washington, DC. Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken to New York on Saturday after they were captured by the U.S. military in Caracas. A series of unexplained drone sightings over a key military installation in Washington has raised alarms among U.S. officials, prompting internal discussions about potential security risks at one of the nation’s most sensitive locations.

According to the New York Post, an unidentified drone was detected flying above Fort McNair on Wednesday.

The Washington Post reported that top officials at this base, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, maintain residences there.

Officials familiar with the situation said the drones’ origin remains unknown, leaving authorities without clear answers about who was operating them or why they were flying over the installation.

The incidents were serious enough that officials reportedly considered relocating both Rubio and Hegseth as a precaution. Despite those discussions, a senior administration official said neither man was ultimately moved.

The sightings come amid heightened military vigilance tied to ongoing tensions involving the United States and Israel in their conflict with Iran. That broader context has led to increased monitoring of potential aerial threats, including drones that could pose surveillance or security risks.

While details remain limited, the military has been closely tracking the situation. Officials have not publicly disclosed how many drones were involved or how long they remained over the base.

A Pentagon spokesperson declined to provide specifics when asked about the incidents.

“The department cannot comment on the secretary’s movements for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is grossly irresponsible,” chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told the outlet.

The report has not been independently verified, and key questions remain unanswered — including who launched the drones and whether they were part of a coordinated effort.

For now, the unexplained flights have underscored growing concerns inside the government about aerial incursions over sensitive sites, particularly at a time when global tensions are already running high.
