A fresh controversy is engulfing New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani after his wife, Rama Duwaji, abruptly deleted an old X account following the resurfacing of a series of incendiary social media posts. The revelations, first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, have triggered intense backlash and raised new questions about the political orbit surrounding City Hall.
Duwaji, 28, who serves as New York City’s first lady, quietly deactivated the account—previously under the handle @_RamaDee—just one day after the report detailed years of troubling content. While her presence on X has vanished, her Instagram account, which boasts roughly 2 million followers, remains active.
The unearthed posts stretch back more than a decade, with some reportedly dating to 2013 when Duwaji was around 15 years old. Others emerged from her late teens and early twenties, painting a broader picture of her online activity over time. Among the most controversial were posts praising Palestinian militants, including references to plane hijacker Leila Khaled and figures tied to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Additional content attributed to Duwaji included sharp attacks on Israel, with one 2015 post claiming Tel Aviv “shouldn’t exist in the first place” and labeling its residents “occupiers.” Other resurfaced material included reposts accusing the U.S. military of “mercilessly slaughtering 3rd world civilians” to uphold “American hegemony.”

The backlash intensified further after reports surfaced that Duwaji had engaged with Instagram content appearing to celebrate Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, including a post dismissing allegations of sexual violence as a “mass hoax.”
Compounding the controversy, one early post allegedly showed Duwaji using a racial slur, adding another layer of criticism to the growing storm.
Despite the escalating outrage, Duwaji has not publicly addressed the controversy. City Hall has also remained silent, declining to respond to multiple requests for comment.
Mayor Mamdani, however, has stepped forward to defend his wife, emphasizing her lack of formal involvement in his administration. “My wife is the love of my life, and she’s also a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall,” Mamdani told reporters.
He underscored that his responsibilities lie with governing the city, stating that he was elected to represent all 8.5 million New Yorkers.
