A TikTok trend built around audio referencing the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk has sparked backlash from the organization and commentators across the political spectrum.

The videos follow a familiar format on TikTok: quick outfit transitions set to trending sounds. In this case, though, the audio includes references to Kirk’s killing, which critics say crosses a line by turning a real act of violence into entertainment.

This is sick. 🤢

Turning Point USA addressed the trend in a statement Saturday, calling on TikTok to remove the audio entirely. The group described the videos as disrespectful and argued they trivialize a serious event.

“Charlie Kirk was the victim of a real act of political violence,” the statement said. “Turning that into viral content is grotesque and dehumanizing.”

The organization framed the trend as part of a broader issue with online culture, where serious or tragic events are sometimes repurposed for engagement. It also pushed for stronger moderation, saying the content has no place on the platform.

As the videos circulated, reactions poured in from social media users and commentators. Riley Gaines, a conservative activist and former NCAA swimmer, criticized the trend in a post on X, accusing those share in it of lacking basic decency. Others echoed that sentiment, arguing that using audio tied to someone’s death for entertainment reflects a wider erosion of boundaries online.

Brian Atlas and Reverend Jordan Wells were among those who also spoke out, both describing the trend as disturbing. Wells, in particular, pointed to how quickly serious moments can be repackaged into viral content, calling it a sign of a culture that has lost its sense of proportion.

The criticism hasn’t come exclusively from one side of the political aisle. Progressive journalist Taylor Lorenz also noted the trend, highlighting how widely it had spread on TikTok and how unusual it was to see such audio used in a lighthearted format.

The backlash arrives amid a broader conversation about how social media platforms handle violent or sensitive material. TikTok said the audio and related videos violate its policies, which prohibit content that glorifies violence. A company spokesperson confirmed that enforcement action has been taken, including removing the original audio and attempting to limit reposts.

“They Turned Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Into a TikTok Outfit Transition Sound”

Let that sink in.

Still, the incident raises familiar questions about moderation at scale. Even when content is flagged and removed, trends can spread quickly across platforms before they’re contained. Critics argue that by the time action is taken, the material has often already reached a wide audience.
