Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman on Tuesday criticized his party over its response to an illegal immigrant allegedly killing female college freshman Sheridan Gorman.
Jose Medina-Medina, a Venezuelan who was released into America under former President Joe Biden after being arrested by Border Patrol, allegedly shot and killed Gorman on Thursday near her Loyola University campus as she attempted to flee, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Fetterman suggested on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” that Democrats were not properly mourning the killing or accepting accountability for it. “[W]hy can’t we just talk about that life lost? Why can’t we just acknowledge this is a serious, serious failure … it’s devastating as a father,” Fetterman said.
The senator noted that he was a co-sponsor of the Laken Riley Act.
“[W]e have to require to protect America from the dangerous elements that shouldn’t even be here illegally always,” he said.
“I think only seven or eight Democrats even voted for Laken Riley. Why can’t you just agree that if you’re breaking the law and you’re already here illegally, deport them,” Fetterman added. “I just don’t understand. And then tragedies just like what happened to that young woman, they are going to continue to happen. That’s justice, that’s beyond common sense. Why can’t you just support this? Why is that unreasonable to anybody?”
Host Bill Hemmer asked Fetterman if he knew the answer to his question. Fetterman said he assumed it was due to Democrats fearing their base, highlighting the backlash he has faced for his heterodox positions.
“But I’d rather be on the moral clarities or on the kinds of right side of history or the correct kinds of principles,” he said.
Border Patrol nabbed and released Medina-Medina twice in 2023, according to a Sunday DHS press release.
“Sheridan Gorman had her whole life ahead of her before this cold-blooded killer decided to end her life. She was failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians who RELEASED this illegal alien TWICE before he went on to commit this heinous murder,” DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said. “We are calling on [Democratic Illinois] Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this criminal illegal alien from jail back into American neighborhoods.”
A spokesperson for Pritzker’s office told the Daily Caller News Foundation on Monday that it anticipated the alleged killer would “be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law” and expressed “thoughts” for those mourning the fatal shooting of Gorman. However, the spokesperson also attacked President Donald Trump’s administration.
“The Trump Administration needs to stop politicizing heinous tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like reinstating federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts,” the spokesperson told the DCNF.
Moreover, Chicago alderwoman Maria Hadden seemed to suggest Gorman may deserve blame for her own fatal shooting.
“[I]t sounds like this might have been a wrong place, wrong time, running into a person who had a gun, they might have unintentionally startled this person, I think,” Hadden said.
