According to DHS, the individuals arrested were in the United States illegally and had been under a final order of removal since 2019. Officials identified them as part of a family unit and stated the arrest was lawful. Federal officials also moved quickly to shut down speculation that the arrest was tied to the Trump administration’s recent deployment of ICE agents to assist TSA operations during the ongoing partial government shutdown. They confirmed the incident was unrelated.
Meanwhile, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie struck a more measured tone, calling the video “upsetting” but emphasizing that the incident appeared to be isolated. He reaffirmed the city’s sanctuary policies, making it clear that local law enforcement would continue to avoid involvement in federal immigration enforcement.
State and local leaders, however, are not backing down. State Sen. Scott Wiener took the fight directly to the airport, holding a press conference to denounce ICE and warn against increased federal presence in local communities.
