A rapid political downfall culminated on Monday as Eric Swalwell announced he would step down from Congress, just one day after abandoning his campaign for governor of California.
According to the New York Post, the California Democrat confirmed his decision in a statement, acknowledging past mistakes while continuing to dispute the most serious claims against him.
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said.
At the same time, he maintained his innocence regarding the allegations that have recently surfaced.
“I will ‘fight the serious, false allegation made against me,’” he added.
Despite pushing back on those claims, Swalwell said he recognized the broader impact the controversy has had on his ability to serve.
“However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make,” he said.
The congressman also addressed growing calls from fellow lawmakers to remove him from office, arguing that such efforts should not bypass due process.
He noted that expulsion without a full review would be inappropriate, but ultimately concluded that remaining in office would hinder his responsibilities.
“It’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.”
Swalwell said he will work with his staff to ensure a smooth transition and continued support for the people he represents.
The resignation follows a wave of political and legal pressure that intensified in recent days.
On Friday, multiple women publicly accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct, including an allegation of rape from a former staffer. The accusations have not been proven in court, and Swalwell has denied wrongdoing.
The controversy quickly reverberated across the political landscape.
Efforts among members of Congress to expel him gained traction, while key allies distanced themselves and several organizations withdrew their endorsements.
At the same time, reports emerged that Swalwell is under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney.
The developments effectively ended what had been a strong run in the gubernatorial race, where Swalwell had been considered a leading candidate.
His resignation now marks a dramatic shift for a longtime lawmaker whose career has been abruptly upended amid mounting scrutiny.
