Barry Christian, a 54-year-old Republican running for District 38 in western Oklahoma, was found dead on Thursday, just two days after he was reported missing. According to a statement from his campaign shared with KOCO, Christian had unexpectedly vanished after failing to attend a scheduled meeting on Tuesday.
Authorities later located his 2024 charcoal gray Ram truck off Highway 30, south of Erick, in a rural area near the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that a body was found inside the vehicle.
However, due to the truck’s position near a ravine, officials have not yet been able to recover the body, which has delayed formal identification and further investigation.
The circumstances surrounding Christian’s death remain unclear. Investigators have not released details about what may have happened in the time between his disappearance and the discovery of his truck.
Christian had been actively campaigning in the days leading up to his disappearance. His last public post on Facebook came Saturday, when he encouraged residents to attend a meet-and-greet at the Mangum Oklahoma Rattlesnake Festival. He said he was looking forward to discussing local issues with members of the community.
As authorities searched the area where his truck was eventually found, a campaign sign bearing his name was spotted lying in the surrounding prairie, adding to the unsettling nature of the scene.
Christian’s campaign described him as a staunch conservative who supported President Donald Trump and emphasized traditional values in his platform. He had positioned himself as a strong advocate for his district, focusing on issues he believed were important to local residents.
His death has hit his family especially hard. In a statement shared with KOCO, his daughter Brooklyn spoke about the emotional toll of the loss.
“Our world is upside down right now,” she said, asking for prayers and privacy as the family processes what has happened. She also urged people to approach the situation with compassion and to respect her father’s legacy while details are still emerging.
She added that the family is deeply grateful to those who helped search for Christian and to the media outlets that spread awareness about his disappearance. Many people, she noted, will feel the impact of his loss.
