It appears Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are the front-runners a new poll on a hypothetical Republican presidential primary.

The two are currently neck and neck, according to an Emerson College Polling survey, with Vance edging out Rubio, 36% to 35%, respectively.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley fall way behind each at 5%.

Another 15% of respondents were undecided.

The Republican primary has “shifted significantly” in Rubio’s favor since February, when 52% of respondents supported Vance and 20% backed Rubio.

“The potential 2028 contenders now compete evenly,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said of the current survey.

Rubio is more favored by GOP primary voters older than age 50, with 41% support compared to Vance’s 35%.

Vance leads among younger Republicans with 37% support while Rubio has 26%.

Should Vance vs. Rubio be the focus of the 2028 GOP primary?

President Donald Trump is limited to two terms in office.

He called Vance and Rubio a “dream team” when asked who he would endorse in 2028.

Vance, who was once a “never-Trump guy,” has been considered the heir apparent to Trump.

He said at a recent press conference he’s “not a potential future candidate” but “a vice president, and I really like my job.”

Rubio, who ran against Trump in 2016 for the top job, was once critical of the president,

He previously said he would support Vance if the vice president runs.

Emerson College Polling surveyed 1,000 likely voters from May 24 to 25 and had a credibility interval, similar to a margin of error, of 3 points.

For the subsample of 432 likely Republican primary voters, the credibility interval was 4.7 points, per The Hill.
