Acting US Attorney Has Sharp Response To Criticism From LA Mayor Following Rally

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 12: Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass speaks at a press conference with civic leaders and members of the immigrant community on June 12, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Bass spoke to members of the media about immigration raids and discussed Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) being forcibly removed from a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press conference today. Things got spicy in Los Angeles on Thursday, and not in the usual taco-truck-on-every-corner kind of way. No, this was a full-blown political tantrum, featuring Governor Gavin Newsom, a redistricting rally, and a guest appearance by federal agents who — brace yourself — dared to enforce the law. And yes, it escalated fast.

Newsom was mid-rally, pushing his latest Orwellian-sounding legislation, the so-called Election Rigging Response Act — a name that sounds like it came from a bad parody of a dystopian novel. Keep in mind, California already has an “independent” redistricting commission. But apparently, that’s not enough for Gavin. When Democrats don’t like the rules, they change them. Or in this case, rename the rulebook entirely.

But that wasn’t even the main act.

Because while Newsom was busy spinning his reality distortion field, something happened — federal agents showed up. Specifically, Border Patrol agents. Not ICE, mind you, but Customs and Border Protection — the people tasked with, you know, securing the border and actually doing something about illegal immigration.

Newsom? He freaked out. Apparently, he couldn’t tell the difference between CBP and ICE (which is a little like a governor confusing the fire department with the gas company).

🚨 LMAO! Gavin Newsom just found out that there are “dozens” of ICE agents outside his “California Liberation Day” press conference and they are all furious. pic.twitter.com/iMiRbtmggS

But it wasn’t just Gavin going weak at the knees. Enter stage left: Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who went nuclear over the idea of federal agents — gasp — arresting illegal immigrants… in a sanctuary city… in broad daylight… right near her precious rally.

She actually said — out loud — that this was “a provocative act.” Her exact words: “There was certainly no need to have a provocative act right here where the governor is having a press conference.”

Let that sink in.

Arresting people breaking federal law is now “provocative.” We’ve officially entered the Twilight Zone, where enforcing immigration law is treated like a hostile takeover.

According to Bass, the arrests were “unbelievably disrespectful.” She accused Border Patrol of trying to “thumb their nose” at the governor. Because apparently, upholding the law is offensive now — at least when it interferes with a governor’s press junket.

And this is the hill they’re dying on. The same Democrats who shrug off smash-and-grab robberies, downplay violent crime, and release repeat offenders back into the streets… are melting down because the Border Patrol had the audacity to do their jobs.

But here’s where it gets fun.

Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino wasn’t having it. He basically looked at Newsom’s meltdown and said, “Sorry, didn’t even know he was there.” Translation: we’re not here for your campaign rally, Gavin. We’re here because your city has turned into a magnet for illegal activity and chaos, and someone has to clean it up.

Then, just when you thought it couldn’t get more awkward for the California crew, Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stepped in and delivered a verbal body slam. He reminded Mayor Bass — and anyone else who needed to hear it — that no city is above federal law. Not even Los Angeles. Not even under Governor Hair Gel’s watch.

As Essayli put it, “Federal agents will operate anywhere and anytime within the United States.” Period. Full stop. No special exemptions because someone’s feelings got hurt during a photo op.

The Mayor and other California officials are under the false impression that they are an actual sanctuary from federal law. No person or state is above the law. Federal agents will operate anywhere and anytime within the United States. https://t.co/H2MNli2OFI

Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin backed it up, saying enforcement has nothing to do with Gavin Newsom and everything to do with safety. CBP patrols L.A. every day, with over 40 teams on the ground. You know — actual public servants doing actual public service.

But to the Bass-Newsom crowd, safety is somehow “disrespectful.” And now they’re flailing. Hard. Because the Democrat narrative is falling apart faster than downtown San Francisco on a rainy weekend. You can’t pretend you’re the party of “democracy” and “law and order” while screaming that law enforcement is “unacceptable” because it interrupted your press conference.

This is what happens when virtue-signaling meets reality. And reality — like Border Patrol — doesn’t care about your optics.
