An active shooter with a rifle and tactical gear reportedly shot at Border Patrol agents arriving at an annex facility in Texas on Monday, injuring one local police officer, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and multiple reports.
Police and border agents shot and killed the gunman, who has not been identified, at a McAllen, Texas, Border Patrol building, a DHS spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Authorities believe the shooting was an intentional attack on border officials, Fox News reported.
“Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter. Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured, including one shot in the knee,” the DHS spokesperson said. “All three have gone to the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation led by the FBI.”
McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told reporters at a Monday press conference that the suspect had been “tentatively identified” as Ryan Mosqueda of Michigan, who was born in 1997. Rodriguez alleged that Mosqueda fired “dozens” of rounds toward the building and agents before they returned fire and killed him in front of it.
Mosqueda arrived in Texas in a vehicle with a Michigan license plate and was reported missing from a Weslaco, Texas, address at 4 a.m. on Monday before allegedly opening fire on the McAllen federal building later that morning, according to Rodriguez. Authorities found more ammunition and weaponry belonging to the suspect at the scene, the chief said.
The FBI’s San Antonio field office said in a statement on X that the public should avoid the area and that no further information is available at this time. The San Antonio field office did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
