Former White House Adviser on Trump Not Wearing a Mask: ‘Do as I Say Not as I Do Isn’t Very Useful’

Former homeland security adviser Tom Bossert says President Donald Trump’s decision to not wear a mask in public is not a good way to convince people to follow the government’s guidelines to do so.

“Do as I say not as I do isn’t very useful to reinforce what the doctor just said,” Bossert said during an interview on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday,

He continued, “Instead of focusing on what you can’t do this weekend, a couple of things you should do: Wear a mask it’s common decency, pray and think about those that passed in our former wars for Memorial Day … but also that passed in the last three months.”

Bossert also reminded Americans to continue to practice social distancing and proper handwashing.

Bossert’s comments come after Trump has attended several public events without wearing a mask. 

On Thursday, Trump toured a Ford factory in Michigan. When asked why he was not wearing a mask, Trump said that he had worn one, but reporters did not see it, “I had one on before. I wore one in this back area, but I didn’t want to give the press the pleasure of seeing it.”

After Trump’s visit, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told CNN that he is not welcome back in the state when she was asked. 

She responded, “I would say speaking on behalf of my department and my office, that’s right. That’s exactly right. I mean, today’s events were extremely disappointing and totally predictable.”

Before his visit, Nessel warned, “If he fails to wear a mask, he’s going to be asked not to return to any enclosed facility inside our state. I know that Ford has asked him to do the same thing.”
