Andrew Cuomo’s campaign attorney, Martin Connor, sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Communications Workers of America Local 1180 (CWA), a union that formally endorsed Adrienne Adams, one of Cuomo’s mayoral election opponents in April.

The letter, sent on Memorial Day and obtained by Politico, claims that the CWA Local 1180 dispersed false information concerning Cuomo and his political and personal record in their May 22 voter information mailer. The mailer headlined a list of “Top 10 Reasons to Vote No to Cuomo for NYC Mayor.”

Connor’s letter disputed only half of the points outlined in the mailer, specifically that “Cuomo has never been a of New York City; that he settled with the Department of Justice regarding allegations of sexual harassment; and that he ‘covered up nursing home deaths’ during Covid; that the Millionaire’s Tax was allowed to expire in 2011; and that he is ‘no friend of workers.’”

The other five points alleged by the mailer are that Cuomo “[p]ushed Tier 6 through the legislature,” “[n]egotiated a contract with the state workers union CSEA using threats of massive layoffs,” “[n]egotiated New York State contracts that set a pattern for our contracts with the City of New York,” “[i]ncreased employee contribution for health insurance costs for state workers to as much as 31% for higher-paid employees with family coverage,” and “[s]pent millions of dollars in taxpayer funds fighting the sexual harassment claims.”

Cuomo is now running for New York City mayor after 10 years as New York governor, from 2011 to 2021. He resigned as governor in August 2021 during an onslaught of sexual harassment claims and calls for his impeachment. Adams, his Democrat opponent, is currently the Speaker of the New York City Council. She was also endorsed by the District Council 37, the largest public employee union in NYC, boasting 150,000 members.

A May 28 poll conducted by Emerson College says that the former governor is leading the numbers, with 35% of voters supporting him as opposed to the 8% that support Adams. A poll conducted by the Working Families Party ballot line, a left-wing group, found different results, placing Adams with an 41% advantage to Cuomo’s 34%, according to POLITICO. The Democratic primaries for the New York Mayoral Election are June 24.

“It’s no surprise that Adreiene Adams and her supporters are willfully distorting and lying about the governor — they’ve been doing it the whole campaign,” Rich Azzopardi, a spokesperson for the Cuomo campaign, said. “New Yorkers should not be fed misinformation by people seeking to represent them — they deserve the truth and we’ll be fighting Trumpian misinformation tactics every step of way using every tool at our disposal.”

The CWA Local 1180 spokeswoman said that the union has “no comment at this time” when contacted concerning the cease-and-desist letter.

The Adams campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
