Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign is inviting Americans to compare the amount they paid in taxes in 2017 with the amount President Donald Trump paid after the New York Times published a report surrounding his financial records.
“Do you pay more or less in federal income taxes than our ‘billionaire’ President? Use this calculator to find out,” Biden’s campaign said on its website.
The amount the user paid in 2017 is calculated and $750 is subtracted from that number.
“Mad? Us too. Join our campaign to elect Joe Biden and make ‘billionaires’ like Donald Trump pay their fair share,” the campaign adds.
The New York Times report claims Trump only paid $750 in income tax in 2016 and 2017, as IJR previously reported.
It also alleges he did not pay income tax for 10 out of the past 15 years.
Trump denied the report during his press briefing on Sunday.
“That is fake news. It’s totally fake news. Made up, fake,” Trump said.
He added, “Actually I pay tax and you will see that as soon as my tax returns, it’s under audit, it’s been under audit for a long time. The IRS does not treat me well, they treat me like the Tea Party… they don’t treat me well, they treat me very badly.”
Alan Garten, a lawyer for the Trump Organization, told the New York Times, “Most, if not all, of the facts appear to be inaccurate.”
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said during her appearance on Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom,” on Tuesday, the report will not affect the president’s chances of winning, as IJR previously reported.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) weighed in on the report.
“For me, this is a national security question,” Pelosi said.
The former vice president and his wife Jill Biden are releasing their 2019 tax returns ahead of the first presidential debate.
Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and her husband Doug Emhoff, are also releasing their 2019 tax returns.
