British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is resigning from his position.
“In the past few weeks, I have been trying to convince my colleagues it would be eccentric to change governments when we have achieved so much,” Johnson said during a speech outside of No.10 Downing Street.
He added, “I regret not to be successful in those arguments and, of course, it’s painful not to be able to see through those projects myself.”
In his message to the British public, Johnson explained, “I know that there will be many people who are relieved and, perhaps, quite a few who will also be disappointed.”
He continued, “And I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world.”

NBC News noted Johnson has plans to remain as prime minister until a successor was chosen.
The announcement comes just days after the resignations of Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid.
The calls for his resignation increased after Johnson’s response to his handling of sexual misconduct allegations, as NBC News reported.
At the time of his remarks, at least 59 members of Johnson’s ministers had announced their resignations.
