The boyfriend of Kaylin Gillis, who was fatally shot after turning into the wrong driveway, shared details about that tragic night.
In an interview with NBC News on Tuesday, Blake Walsh, 19, shared that he was with Gillis, 20, at the time of the shooting and revealed how the incident occurred.
“We thought we were at the right address. We didn’t have any cell service to figure it out. As soon as we figured it out that we were at the wrong location, we started to leave, and that’s when everything happened,” he explained.
Walsh added that he tried to flee the scene but it was too late.
“My friend said, ‘They’re shooting — go!’ I tried to step on the gas as fast as I could, and that’s when the fatal shot came through,” he explained.
The New York native said he hoped that Gillis didn’t suffer after being hit by the bullet.
“I want to believe it was instant. I’m hoping it was. I’m praying it was,” he admitted.
After Gillis was shot, Walsh along with their two friends called 911. Following the emergency phone call, Gillis was pronounced dead a few miles away and Walsh was wounded after being struck in the neck, according to authorities.
Walsh said he “had high hopes” for the future and planned on spending the rest of his life with Gillis, who was his high school sweetheart.
“I want the world to know how good of a person she really was and how much she impacted everybody who had the fortunate opportunity to be in her life,” he shared.
He added, “My world was taken from me Saturday.”
Gillis also stated that he needed to look at the man who “took his girlfriend away” from him.
Authorities have named Kevin Monahan, 65, as the suspect in Gillis’ murder after she, Walsh, and their friends accidentally drove into the wrong driveway at his home, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy told reporters Monday.
They had been searching for a party they planned on attending.
Monahan was charged with second-degree murder and plead not guilty, via his lawyer, Kurt Mausert.
