Police reported that a woman was beheaded in San Carlos, California.
According to KNTV, authorities familiar with the investigation said the woman’s head was severed with a sword on Thursday.
The suspect returned to the scene and was arrested in connection with her death, as the outlet reported.
It was reported that the suspect was identified as Jose Landaeta Solano.
Witnesses reported an assault in progress and flagged down deputies at 11:50 a.m.
The woman was found dead as deputies arrived at the scene.
San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Eamonn Allen said the suspect used a “stabbing instrument.”
“Anytime someone loses their life, it’s certainly a tragedy,” Allen said.
The statement continues, “As far as the shocking nature of it, I do know that the deputies that first arrived on scene were a little beset by the scene. We are providing them peer support. We are also providing support for the witnesses that were on scene as well because there were several civilian witnesses.”
Additionally, investigators explained to the outlet that Solano has a violent past and experience with mental illness.
“When our deputies responded to the scene and started to process the scene, it’s my understanding that he was contacted in the area, but he was not in the immediate scene,” Allen said.
KNTV was also told the victim has two children and a restraining order against Solano.
