Only in 2025 America could someone look at the Olympics — a global stage for athletic excellence, national pride, and billions in economic activity — and decide the real problem is that Donald Trump might make it too successful.

That’s exactly what Gustavo Arellano of the Los Angeles Times just did. In a column dripping with political hysteria, he actually called for Los Angeles to abandon hosting the 2028 Summer Games altogether. Not because the city can’t afford it. Not because there’s no infrastructure. Not because of security risks. No, the crisis here is that President Trump will be in charge of the federal task force coordinating the Games.

You’d think Trump was bringing tanks to patrol the beach volleyball courts the way Arellano frames it. According to him, this isn’t about organizing a massive international event; it’s a “siege” — his word — on Los Angeles. Apparently, the same federal involvement every American Olympics has had is suddenly sinister because the guy in the Oval Office doesn’t sip lattes at Venice Beach.

The column reads like a Hollywood pitch for “Olympics: The Resistance Edition.” Arellano paints Trump and his administration as a “goon squad” of “L.A. haters,” name-dropping Vice President JD Vance, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, and Stephen Miller like they’re Bond villains plotting the downfall of kale smoothies. His fear? That Trump might use the Olympics to show the world a functioning, secure Los Angeles. Imagine the horror.

And it’s not just about Trump showing up to cut a ribbon. Arellano warns of an “occupied L.A.,” transformed by a “deportation blitzkrieg” before the opening ceremony. Translation: if Trump enforces immigration law during an international event, it might ruin the carefully curated illusion that everything in Los Angeles is fine.

Never mind that the Games are expected to pump $18 billion into the economy. Never mind the global tourism boost, the infrastructure investment, or the fact that the Olympics are supposed to be one of those rare moments when Americans put politics aside. For Arellano, it’s better to burn the torch before Trump gets anywhere near it than risk him having a political win.

LA residents have no better partners than @USDOT and President Trump. But @CAGovernor and @MayorOfLA better clean their act up ahead of the Olympics and the World Cup. The anarchy we’ve just seen play out across LA streets is unacceptable.

This is the purest form of Trump Derangement Syndrome — turning one of the most unifying spectacles in the world into a partisan purity test. Don’t like the president? Fine. But suggesting your city torpedo the Olympics because you can’t stand the idea of him shaking hands with athletes is like refusing to celebrate Christmas because you don’t like the mall Santa.

Trump’s signing an EO for a 2028 Olympics task force to make LA games safe & epic:

We’ll show America wins!

First: mass deportations to clean LA streets!

But will @CAgovernor & @KarenBassLA ’s weak leadership mess it up?pic.twitter.com/aCASGnTPVB https://t.co/xFm7WM0UAW

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said it plainly: this is about showcasing America’s greatness. With Trump at the helm, you can bet he’ll make the event big, bold, and impossible to ignore. That’s exactly what terrifies his critics. They’d rather skip the whole thing than watch him pull it off.

The question isn’t whether Trump will “use” the Olympics to his advantage — of course he will. Every president would. The real question is why some people would rather see their own city lose billions and embarrass itself on the world stage than let him have the win. That tells you everything you need to know about how far gone the anti-Trump obsession really is.
