Comedian David Letterman joined the workforce Friday, bagging groceries and stocking shelves at the Hy-Vee grocery store in Des Moines, Iowa.

An image went viral on Facebook with the caption, “You never know who you’ll bump into while shopping the aisles at Hy-Vee.”

Letterman stopped by to help promote the Hy-Vee Indycar Race Weekend. He posted a clip of his work to Instagram that noted he owns one of the race cars that competed Sunday: #45.

In the video, he asked the store manager to tie on his apron and conversed with employees as he goofed off during his shift.

He drank soup while stocking shelves and hijacked the intercom to announce, “Today and today only celery for Hy-Vee shoppers, absolutely free! Help yourself to the celery!”

Letterman was also seen eating food all over the store. He said, “This is where they’re making their money. Right here.”

He joked with customers while bagging groceries, and was told that he did a “fantastic” job before leaving. He thanked the manager and told him, “I hope you recover from this day.”

The New York Post compared Letterman’s day of work to Lana Del Ray’s similar appearance, where she took on a shift waitressing at an Alabama Waffle House on Thursday, via Page Six.

But Letterman took his regular working day to another level, noting that he was so comfortable with the Hy-Vee store chain that he didn’t mind eating off of the floor there.

Then as he departed on his way to the race he said, “That’s all I’ve got…30 years in television.”
