Well, here we are again. Another December, another tree, and another mind-boggling attempt to erase the word Christmas like it’s some kind of slur. And this time, it’s not a right-wing senator or some fed-up small-town mayor calling it out. No, folks—it’s David Spade. Yes, that David Spade. The “Joe Dirt” guy. The dry-witted, mostly apolitical comedian who’s now apparently too “Christian” for your local Michigan mall.
On a recent episode of his podcast Fly on the Wall, which he co-hosts with fellow SNL alum Dana Carvey, Spade vented about a tree lighting ceremony he attended—or tried to attend—that seemed to go out of its way to avoid the word “Christmas.” Not “Happy Holidays.” Not “Season’s Greetings.” Just… “tree lighting.” Like it was some mysterious pagan rite with no context whatsoever. A festive pile of lights in December that, heaven forbid, actually mean something.
Spade said the mall (unnamed, but he claimed it was in Michigan) intentionally left out the word Christmas during the entire event. He summed it up in a way only a sarcastic Hollywood veteran could: “So it’s just a tree? … A December to Remember? Is it a Lexus dealership?”
And honestly, he’s not wrong.
What exactly are we celebrating if we can’t even say the name of the holiday that inspired the whole thing? Why are malls, of all places—those temples of capitalism that practically owe their fourth-quarter survival to Christmas shopping—tiptoeing around the word like it might trigger a lawsuit?
Spade didn’t hold back, even suggesting that the effort to avoid saying “Christmas” was a level of politically correct absurdity that made no sense. Carvey agreed, saying that the non-Christian friends in his life weren’t offended by it. In fact, they liked the holiday just fine, complete with all the lights, the music, the food, and yes, even the word. Imagine that—people enjoying a cultural tradition without needing it sanitized, stripped, and repackaged into something meaningless.
Let’s face it—this kind of thing doesn’t happen by accident. It’s intentional. You don’t “accidentally” leave the word Christmas out of an event called a tree lighting in December. You do it because someone, somewhere, decided that acknowledging the most celebrated holiday in the country is suddenly controversial. That maybe it’s safer—woker, perhaps—to just pretend it’s some generic winter ritual where we stand around blinking lights and drink overpriced cocoa without asking why we’re doing it.
Even Spade—who openly described himself as more “spiritual” than religious—recognized the absurdity of all this. At one point, he said, “I’d say stop that bullsh*t,” referring to the weird verbal gymnastics these public venues now perform to avoid offending…well, nobody, really. Because most Americans, regardless of their religious beliefs, understand what Christmas is and don’t clutch their pearls when someone mentions it.
He even touched on something the media never talks about—actual persecution of Christians in other parts of the world, like Nigeria, where being a believer is not just unfashionable, it’s dangerous. But sure, let’s pretend the real oppression is someone hearing the word “Christmas” at a tree lighting in suburban Michigan.
NEW: Actor David Spade CALLS OUT the anti-Christian crowd and liberals who refuse to say “Christmas.”.
Should public events explicitly mention Christmas?“They’re careful not to say the word ‘Christmas’… what is the tree for? I don’t like the anti-Christian view.”

Look, this isn’t about a tree. It’s about a culture that’s been slowly backing away from its own identity for years—one polite press release at a time. When comedians—especially the kind who typically steer clear of culture war landmines—start sounding the alarm, maybe it’s time to ask why we’re bending over backward to make the majority feel invisible.
If we can’t say “Christmas” in December without fear of upsetting the Twitter mobs or the local diversity committee, what can we say anymore?
So here’s a thought: maybe, just maybe, it’s time to stop apologizing for traditions that have defined this country for generations. David Spade wasn’t being edgy. He was being obvious. And that might be the most rebellious thing a Hollywood comedian can do in 2025.
Merry Christmas, folks. Say it while you still can.
