Democrat California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas opened California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s final State of the State address with a “moment of silence to honor” Renee Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minnesota.
The Department of Homeland Security told the Daily Caller on Wednesday that Good attempted to run over law enforcement officials with her vehicle in Minneapolis, Minnesota, leading to the altercation. Before Newsom gave his final address on Thursday morning, Rivas asked for the lawmakers to take a moment of silence in Good’s honor.
“And before we start this morning’s proceedings, I want to begin by calling for a moment of silence. A moment of silence to honor Renee Nicole Good, a US citizen murdered by ICE yesterday in Minneapolis,” Rivas said. “For the countless immigrants who have been detained, who have been denied due process and are being held without charge in deplorable conditions across our country.”
“America is a nation of immigrants and we are nothing, we are nothing, without the rule of law. Please join me in honoring Miss Renee Nicole Good and so many others suffering in these unprecedented times,” Rivas added.
The room could then be heard going completely silent with some bowing their heads before Rivas moved on by thanking the group.
Chaos between protesters and ICE agents broke out on Wednesday afternoon after Good, 37, was fatally shot inside her vehicle. At the time of the incident, Good was blocking the street and accelerated after ICE agents ordered her out of the vehicle.
Following the incident, Democrats in the state and nationwide criticized ICE and its operations, with Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey telling ICE to “get the f*ck out” of his city. Other Democrat lawmakers criticized ICE, claiming the incident did not just the agent using deadly force against Good.
Vice President J.D. Vance held a briefing Thursday morning pushing back on Democrats and instead defending the agents’ actions, accusing many media outlets of “lying about this attack” by framing Good as a peaceful protester.
Since the shooting, protests have broken out in Minneapolis, with more expected to continue over the weekend in other Democrat-led cities like Los Angeles.
