Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody will be stepping into U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) place once he ascends into his new role as the head of the Department of State.
During a news conference, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) made his announcement Thursday, and noted these appointments play a crucial role in getting results out of elected officials in Congress.
“These are always significant appointments, but I think right now appointments like these are more significant than ever,” DeSantis said, “This is a time for action, and a time for Washington D.C. to deliver results to the American people. There are no more excuses for Republicans, we can’t choose the easy path here, we must be able to do what it takes, make the hard decisions necessary to usher in a revival of the American experiment.”
DeSantis noted one of the biggest issues that concern Americans is the southern border and unchecked illegal immigration, adding he and the Florida Legislature are going to be working with the Trump administration to ensure immigration laws are respected and enforced. Because of this, DeSantis said this heavily influenced his ultimate pick to replace Rubio’s U.S. Senate seat, adding his final decision relied on demonstrated actions.
“I wanted someone with a demonstrated record of delivering results on those important issues. Talk is cheap. We need people who have demonstrated fidelity to these principles with their actions,” DeSantis said, “So that is why today I’m proud to announce that I am selecting our attorney general Ashley Moody, to serve as our next U.S. Senator … Many of you know her, she’s obviously been on the ballot twice state-wide and won big victories. She’s honorably served our people as her time as attorney general over these last six years.”
Upon DeSantis’ announcement, Moody said she would not let down the governor, the citizens of Florida, or her country.
“Governor, I want you to know I will not let you down, I will not let the citizens of Florida down, and I will not let my country down,” Moody said, adding, “I am very honored with this nomination.”
Moody noted she will be bringing the same energy she had as Florida’s attorney general, and further said she thinks of the appointment as a calling and not just a job.
“I will bring the same persistence, and passion, and tenacity as a United States senator, that I have brought as Florida’s attorney general,” Moody said, “If you have worked with me, and fought with me over the last six years, you know I don’t think of this as a job, I think of it as a calling.”
Moody said she likes to deliver on her promises to her constituents and is excited to fight alongside Trump and his administration to deliver the American people his American First agenda.
