Speaking on the “Pod Save America” podcast, Lemon acknowledged that the thought has crossed his mind. “Do I ever think about it? Yes,” he said. “Could it happen? Yeah, it could happen if the right opportunity presented itself.” He added that while some people might dismiss the idea, he believes he’s capable of doing the job—and even suggested he could lead the country more effectively than President Donald Trump.

At the same time, Lemon made clear he isn’t preparing a campaign or laying the groundwork for a run. He pointed to the personal cost of public office as a major deterrent, saying a presidential bid could upend his life.

He also touched on what he sees as unequal standards in politics, arguing that white male candidates are often given more leeway than women or people from minority backgrounds. As an independent, he said, he would also likely need to align with a major party—specifically the Democratic Party—if he were to seriously consider a run.

Still, Lemon pushed back on the idea that it’s unrealistic for someone like him to even entertain the possibility. He framed it less as a plan and more as a question of openness. “Why can’t I think about running for office?” he said, pointing to the current political landscape as justification for at least considering it.

NEW: Don Lemon suggests he will run for president if the opportunity presents itself.

“I think I could be President of United States. I could definitely run this country better than Donald Trump.”

He also drew a comparison to former President Barack Obama, noting that Obama’s rise once seemed unlikely to many. Lemon said he doesn’t have a personal ambition to become president, but he does believe he could handle the responsibilities of the role.

In a follow-up comment, Lemon added a more personal dimension to the idea. He said he would look for both public support and what he described as a spiritual sign before making any serious decision. “If my creator gives me a sign, and so do the people, then it’s game on,” he said, while also sharply criticizing Trump’s leadership.

Beyond politics, Lemon also used the podcast appearance to talk about his career in media. He suggested he could take on a leadership role behind the scenes at a news organization, rather than returning as an on-air anchor. With decades of experience, he said he could step in and address operational or editorial issues quickly.

Lemon has remained in the public eye since leaving CNN, including a recent incident in January where he livestreamed a protest at a Minnesota church. That event led to legal trouble, with Lemon facing charges related to conspiracy to deprive religious freedom and an alleged violation of the FACE Act.

For now, Lemon’s comments land somewhere between speculation and possibility—an acknowledgment that while a presidential run isn’t on his immediate agenda, he isn’t ruling it out entirely.
