Eight gunmen with Mexico’s Gulf Cartel and three Mexican Army soldiers, as well as three innocent motorists, sustained multiple injuries during a crash when authorities were transporting the captured gunmen in an armored truck after a shootout.

The incident took place in the outskirts of Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas. According to information provided to Breitbart Texas by Tamaulipas authorities, the gunmen had been captured by Mexican authorities earlier in the day during a raid in the city of Tula. The captured gunmen had been loaded into an armored military truck and were being moved to Ciudad Victoria to a federal office for investigation and detention when the crash occurred.

Information provided by law enforcement pointed to the military vehicle having run a red light and striking a Ford Escape at a major intersection. After the initial crash, the military vehicle kept moving and struck a motorcyclist who was also moving along that intersection.

The collision injured several people, including the motorcycle rider, the two individuals in the Ford Escape, three Mexican Army soldiers, and the eight captured gunmen.

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene and set up a security perimeter at a local hospital in an attempt to prevent a possible escape or rescue attempt by the cartel gunmen.

After the gunmen received medical treatment for their injuries, they were turned over to federal authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

The gunmen were part of the Matamoros faction of the Gulf Cartel, also known as the Escorpiones, which has been expanding their turf into other parts of the state.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart News Foundation traveled to Mexico City and the states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities. The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart News Foundation’s Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and their original Spanish. This article was written by “Francisco Morales” from Tamaulipas.
