Erika Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, has come forward with new details about what happened behind the scenes after ABC’s late-night host Jimmy Kimmel made controversial comments about her husband’s assassination.

In a clip from an upcoming Fox News interview with Jesse Watters, Erika shared that a representative from Sinclair Broadcast Group reached out to her after backlash poured in over Kimmel’s remarks, asking if she wanted an apology or possibly to appear on his show.

Her husband, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated on September 10 while speaking in front of thousands of students at Utah Valley University. The suspect, whose name has not been released publicly due to ongoing legal proceedings, was allegedly motivated by extreme left-wing ideology, according to law enforcement. The shocking murder rocked the political world, and especially the conservative movement Kirk helped lead.

Just five days later, on September 15, Jimmy Kimmel addressed the situation on his late-night show. Instead of offering condolences or keeping the tone respectful, Kimmel criticized conservatives, saying, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

That comment sparked strong backlash from both media figures and viewers. Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns many ABC affiliate stations, reportedly took the criticism seriously. Erika Kirk says they reached out privately, asking what they could do. “Do you want Jimmy to give you an apology? Do you want to be on his show? How can we make it right?” the representative asked, according to Erika’s interview.

Erika told them, through her team, that she had no interest in receiving a forced apology. “This is not our issue. Not our mess,” she said. “If you want to say I’m sorry to someone who’s grieving, go right ahead. If that’s not in your heart, don’t do it. I don’t want it. I don’t need it.”

Fox & Friends aired the segment and praised her calm and grace in how she handled the situation. One of the hosts pointed out that she could have demanded a stronger response or even called for Kimmel to be removed from television. Another mentioned that it wasn’t just one comment from Kimmel, but multiple. On September 16, the day after his first remarks, Kimmel doubled down, saying, “Many in MAGAland are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk.”

The backlash eventually reached the network level. On September 17, Sinclair and Nexstar both announced that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would be preempted “indefinitely” on their ABC-affiliate stations. ABC followed suit, announcing the show would be temporarily taken off the air. Kimmel returned on September 23 after a one-week suspension, but only to national ABC audiences. Several local affiliates continued to pull the show from their schedules even after his return.

During his absence, some public figures and Hollywood personalities claimed Kimmel was being censored, with others blaming President Donald Trump, accusing him of trying to silence opposition voices. However, Sinclair appeared firm in its decision, standing by Erika Kirk and taking steps to reach out to her personally in the wake of Kimmel’s remarks.

Should public figures be held accountable for their remarks after a tragedy?

🚨BREAKING—Sinclair asked if Erika Kirk wanted Jimmy Kimmel to give her an apology, or to be on his show.

While the controversy surrounding Kimmel continues, Erika Kirk’s measured response has drawn widespread attention. She has remained focused on continuing her late husband’s legacy and leading Turning Point USA into the next phase. Charlie Kirk had become a central figure for conservative youth activism, and Erika is now stepping into a leadership role within the organization.

As political tensions remain high in the country, the events of this past September have reminded many of the deep divide in political discourse — and how important it is for public figures to consider the weight of their words during times of tragedy.
