Republican congressmen groaned at Democrat California Rep. Linda Sanchez on Wednesday after accusing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of interrupting her because she is a “woman.”

After Bessent told Sanchez during the House Ways and Means Committee hearing that President Donald Trump’s tariffs would only cause prices to increase one time, she accused him of talking out of “both sides of [his] mouth” by claiming that prices have already risen. The secretary then tried to correct her, but the congresswoman interrupted her to tell him not to talk over her during her questioning.

“Please don’t interrupt me. The time is mine. The time is mine, please don’t interrupt me. I will grant you an opportunity it answer them, but please don’t interrupt me during my time,” Sanchez said. “I know I’m a woman, but please, try to limit yourself to answer my questions.”

Several congressmen could be heard groaning at her remark about her sex.

“No, I’m sorry, but we get talked over all the time and I don’t want that to happen at this hearing,” Sanchez said.

WATCH:

Despite the congresswoman’s claims about rising prices, inflation rose less than expected in May, which analysts say “bodes very well” for the U.S. economy. The consumer price index (CPI) increased a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in May, after rising 0.2% in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Bessent told the congresswoman that her claims are incorrect and that the U.S. will find out whether or not China is a “good trading partner.” The Treasury secretary just returned to the U.S. from London, England, after negotiating in trade talks with China following Trump’s reciprocal tariff policy.

Trump declared the trade deal talks with China “done” in a Wednesday post on TRUTH Social, in which he said the U.S. will maintain a 55% tariff rate on Chinese imports, while China will impose a 10% rate on American goods. Trump initially raised China’s tariffs from 104% to 145% on April 10 over the country’s retaliation, and eventually reduced them to 30% in May while the two nations were in talks.
