Vice President Kamala Harris’ candid statement about protecting her home shocked many, including Oprah Winfrey.
The comment came during the “Unite for America Rally” livestream event hosted by Winfrey on Thursday, where the two discussed issues such as gun violence. Winfrey expressed surprise at Harris’ recent admission of gun ownership during the previous week’s presidential debate.
“I did not know that,” Winfrey said. “And I thought that was powerful.”
Harris responded, “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot, sorry.” The remark was met with laughter.
“Probably should not have said that,” Harris quickly added, smiling as she quipped about her staff handling any fallout.

This exchange follows Harris’ firm comments on gun ownership during the presidential debate.
“I’ve made very clear my position on fracking and then this business about taking everyone’s guns away. Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking anybody’s guns away,” she said at the debate.
However, despite her assurances, social media users jumped to criticize Harris’ recent comments, with some recalling her prior support for gun control measures and mandatory buybacks.
As The Washington Post reports, “Kamala Harris supports red-flag laws and universal background checks for all gun purchases.”
