He and His Shadows — Punxsutawney Phil Becomes a Father

Who could have predicted this? Punxsutawney Phil is a father.

Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania groundhog who predicts the coming of spring every Feb. 2 — give or take a week or two, became the father of two babies, according to The Associated Press.

Punxsutawney Phil is “married” to wife Phylis.

The announcement was made via Facebook by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle Wednesday.

The names or sexes of the babies were not revealed.

“We’re pleased to announce that Punxsutawney Phil has had his first children; we believe there are two baby groundhogs and that Phil and Phyllis have started a family,” said Thomas Dunkel, president of the The Inner Circle. “We’re pleased about it, and I talked to Phil with my cane, which lets me speak Groundhogese, and Phil could not be more excited that he started a family.”

Dunkel said a club member discovered the babies Saturday when he came to feed their parents.

Phil comes out of Gobbler’s Knob every Feb. 2 to forecast when spring will come. If he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. This year, he doesn’t see his shadow, it will be an early spring. The event formally began in 1887.

The happy couple live in climate-controlled quarters at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library, per the AP, adding the growing family will be moved to a larger home on the library’s grounds.
