House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Subcommittee on the Constitution Chairman Chip Roy, R-Texas, are demanding liberal nonprofit groups turn over records tied to alleged support for Antifa as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on left-wing militants.
According to Fox News, in letters obtained by the outlet, the lawmakers called on the Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ) and the Open Society Foundations to provide communications, financial records, and internal policies related to Refuse Fascism and other groups reportedly tied to Antifa, which President Donald Trump designated as a domestic terrorist organization earlier this year.
The letter cites reports that AFGJ “acts as fiscal sponsor for Antifa groups” and has provided donations to Refuse Fascism, which has appeared at multiple Antifa-linked protests in recent years.
“Antifa’s left-wing extremist violence cannot be justified,” the lawmakers wrote. “AFGJ is directly responsible for the activities conducted by its projects as well as the use of funds raised on behalf of those projects.”
The Refuse Fascism Leadership Board pointed Fox News Digital to its stated mission online, saying, “Sunsara Taylor, along with all the other leaders of Refuse Fascism, has only ever advocated for nonviolent means to advance RefuseFascism.org’s mission.”
Jordan and Roy also expressed concern over AFGJ’s sponsorship of Samidoun, which the Treasury Department has described as “a sham charity” for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terrorist group.
According to 2020 tax filings, the Alliance for Global Justice received $250,000 from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, a grantmaking arm of George Soros’s Open Society Foundations, designated to “catalyze Black communities into the global movement for climate justice.”
The lawmakers’ letter to Open Society Foundations also referenced a Capital Research Center report claiming OSF has donated more than $80 million to groups that “support or engage in terrorism or other extremist violence” since 2016, including “at least $2 million” to the Sunrise Movement, which allegedly backed Antifa-linked activists in Atlanta.
Republicans have also raised alarms over AFGJ’s ties to anti-Israel protests on college campuses after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., has called for the IRS to revoke the group’s tax-exempt status.
The letters demand both organizations preserve and turn over records dating back to 2017, including details on fiscal sponsorships, grants, and any internal awareness of criminal activity by affiliated groups.
The Trump White House has repeatedly condemned Antifa, calling it a “radical terrorist organization” responsible for years of violence in cities such as Portland and Seattle.
“Anyone denying this reality is either intentionally lying or just plain stupid,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said. “President Trump and his entire administration are committed to stopping Antifa’s violence once and for all.”
