The war of words between federal and local law enforcement just exploded into the open.
ICE Director Todd Lyons hit back hard Saturday after Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal threatened to arrest ICE agents for doing their jobs — calling her bluff in no uncertain terms: “Try it. See what happens.”
The tense showdown began when Bilal, standing alongside radical District Attorney Larry Krasner, launched a full-blown verbal assault on ICE. She accused federal immigration agents of being “fake,” “made-up,” and “criminals” — even suggesting they’d be arrested if they dared operate in her city.
But Lyons wasn’t having it.
“This rhetoric is what’s fueling the danger our officers face every single day,” he said during an appearance on The Big Weekend Show on Fox News. “You can’t pit a local law enforcement officer against a federal law enforcement officer. We are out there trying to do a lawful law enforcement mission.”
Then came the warning shot.
“I’m not usually one to speak like this,” Lyons admitted. “But try it. Try to arrest my folks. Let’s see what happens.”
The comments struck a nerve in a country already strained by a national security crisis at the border. ICE agents are enforcing federal law — laws Congress passed — but leftist city officials like Bilal and Krasner are treating them like criminals.
Bilal went full activist at her press conference, ranting, “You don’t want this smoke … we’ll bring it to you.” She refused to even say ICE’s name, labeling them “fake wanna-be law enforcement” and bizarrely claiming the “criminal in the White House” would be powerless to protect them.
But the Philadelphia Police Department quickly distanced itself from her inflammatory rhetoric, clarifying that Bilal does not control the city’s police force — and emphasizing that Philly cops will continue cooperating with other law enforcement agencies, including federal partners.
So far, no arrests of ICE agents have been attempted. But Lyons’ message is clear: federal law enforcement isn’t backing down.
And if rogue city officials want to pick a fight with the feds, they better be ready for one they can’t win.
