Duke and UConn delivered a classic Sunday night game with a Final Four spot on the line, but Charles Barkley had something else on his mind: immigration.
During a break in the CBS/TNT broadcast, the Inside the NBA co-host shifted the conversation away from the game. What started as a feature on UConn forward Alex Karaban turned into a broader comment on immigration in the U.S.
Viewers, already locked into a tight game, were probably expecting analysis or a few jokes. Instead, Barkley used the moment to criticize the federal government, calling the current situation “a travesty and a disgrace.”
“The way some of these other immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace… I think what’s going on in our country, what we’re doing to some of these amazing immigrants, is really unfortunate and it’s really sad.” – Charles Barkley on CBS pic.twitter.com/uEllZpD57u

Should sports broadcasts focus on immigration issues during games?
The comments came after a segment about Karaban’s family moving to the U.S. from Ukraine and Belarus. Barkley said he admires Karaban and his family, but is frustrated with how other immigrants are treated.
“I love that kid and his family, but the way some of these other immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace,” he said.
And for some fans watching at home, it felt like a strange detour in the middle of a game they just wanted to enjoy.
