Singer John Legend is considering leaving the United States if voters reelect President Donald Trump, and he is also encouraging Americans to think about doing the same.
Legend told Cosmopolitan this week Trump is a danger to democracy and suggested Americans may want to flock to a country that protects democracy.
“At some point, if that project [to destroy democracy] was to be in any way successful, you’d have to think about going somewhere that is a true democracy, that has respect for the rule of law and human rights,” Legend said.
He added, “If America chooses to be that place then people will have to start thinking about going somewhere else. It is truly disturbing and concerning.”
Legend explained while it would be difficult to leave the United States, he may have no other choice.
“Every once in a while you think about it,” Legend said.
He went on, “We were born and raised here, all of our families are here. It would be hard to leave. But I don’t know what one’s supposed to do when you have a leader who is trying to destroy democracy.”
Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigan have voiced their criticism of Trump in the past.
Trump previously took to twitter to fire back at Legend.
He called the singer “boring” and his wife “filthy mouthed.”
Legend told the magazine he is not concerned about the upcoming election because he believes Americans are tired of a Trump presidency.
“I’m not nervous. I strongly believe America is exhausted from three and a half years of Donald Trump. Exhausted from the daily efforts to destroy democracy and the free press,” Legend said.
He slammed Trump for his coronavirus response and called it “embarrassing.”
Legend reiterated the nation cannot handle another four years of Trump.
“We can’t bear another four years of this. As Michelle Obama said, we have to vote like our lives depend on it. I honestly think the American people will do it. I truly don’t know if we would be a democracy when we were done if we went another four years,” he said.
Legend is not the only celebrity to threaten to leave the United States if Trump is reelected.
Actors Samuel L. Jackson, Lena Dunham, and singers Cher and Miley Cyrus are among several who said they would relocate if Trump won the White House in 2016.
