Influencer JoJo Siwa called out actress Candace Cameron Bure over her comments on “traditional marriage.”
On Thursday, Siwa, 20, appeared on actor Nick Viall’s podcast “Viall Files” and explained why she took issue with Bure’s statements.
“It was that she [wanted] to do a movie about that to put down [the] LGBTQIA [community] and that she was going to specifically make movies that had no representation of LGBTQIA,” she said.
Siwa, who is a part of the LGBT community, added, “It’s fine if you are doing it because it’s just your movie’s storyline and it’s just it is what it is… like not everything needs to be gay essentially.”
However, she further explained excluding same-sex couples from movies shouldn’t be done “out of spite.”
“To say that, ‘Too much is about LGBTQIA. You guys suck and I want to make a movie about traditional marriage and you’re not traditional,’ that got to me a little bit,” she continued.
Siwa said hearing Cameron’s comments made her realize that they were “never going to agree” and they were “never going to be friends” [or] “get along.”
“I’m never going to be able to change her, she’s not gonna be able to change me, we can both just live life,” the former “Dance Moms” star added.
However, Siwa shared she wishes Bure, whom she deemed the “rudest” celebrity in a now-deleted TikTok video, was “able to be a little more open” and “a little more accepting.”
“I’m OK with calling her out in the way that I did,” she added. In a 2022 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Bure revealed she left the Hallmark Channel to join Great American Family (GAC Family) because she thinks “that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core,” by only including heterosexual couples.
Bure responded to the backlash over her comments in a post on her Instagram page.
“All of you who know me, know beyond question that I have great love and affection for all people. It absolutely breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone,” she wrote.
