Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley said on Fox News Thursday that it is time to pull strings on universities that misuse taxpayer dollars to discriminate against Jewish students.

During an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” Hawley discussed his concerns about the misuse of taxpayer dollars by universities in ways that he believes discriminate against Jewish students. Hawley said he applauded the Trump administration’s willingness to enforce American laws and protect students on campuses, particularly Jewish students.

“They’re discriminating against Jewish students, no doubt, and the worst part is they’re doing it with our money. They’re taking our tax money. And you’re right. That money comes with a lot of strings attached,” Hawley told host Laura Ingraham. “It’s time we started to pull on those strings.”

Hawley said that President Donald Trump taking over the White House marks a turning point in addressing what he sees as a systemic issue across American campuses.

WATCH:

“We have a new president in the White House. I think we have somebody who is willing to enforce American law. I think we have somebody who wants to protect students on campus, who wants to protect Jewish students on campus and isn’t gonna put up with this BS anymore,” Hawley said. “That’s what’s happened. Laura, I’m glad Trump is out there finally holding these people accountable.”

Hawley criticized institutions that he said indoctrinate students while profiting from their endowments.

“You know what we should do? Tax their endowments. These universities are just giant hedge funds that take our money, indoctrinate our kids and then get rich off of it,” Hawley added. “These people should be getting no federal funding. We ought to be taxing their endowments, and we ought to be expelling from this country any student on a visa who engages in this kind of garbage.”

Ingraham then referenced the Bob Jones University Supreme Court case, which said that institutions found guilty of discrimination could lose their tax-exempt status — a precedent that could apply if universities are shown to systematically discriminate.

“There’s a clear pattern in practice here, and the pattern in practice is to coddle the left-wing and pro-Hamas lawbreakers who are smashing into buildings, who are assaulting Jewish students,” Hawley told Ingraham. “I had a student in my office the other day, proud American, Jewish American. He’s actually gonna join our armed forces, and what did he have? His arm in a sling. Why? Because on his own college campus, because he had the temerity to set up a table for Israel, he got jumped by a bunch of thugs. I mean, really? And the college is just putting up with it. Just letting it happen.”

Anti-Israel protesters from “Jewish Voice for Peace” stormed Trump Tower in New York City, demanding President Trump release Mahmoud Khalil, who was involved in Columbia University encampments. Wearing red shirts with the slogan “Jesus Says Stop Arming Israel,” they equated Trump with Nazis and fascists, chanting “Free Mahmoud, free them all” and asserting that opposing fascism aligns with Jewish tradition.

The Trump administration withdrew approximately $400 million in federal funds from Columbia University, citing the institution’s failure to address ongoing harassment of Jewish students, with warnings of further financial penalties if corrective measures are not taken. In response, Columbia announced its commitment to combat antisemitism and collaborate with the Trump administration to resolve the issue.
