One would think singing at a presidential inauguration would be the ultimate show of patriotism.
Not if you are Joy Behar, one of the co-hosts of ABC’s “The View.”
Behar recently took aim at country singer Carrie Underwood for agreeing to sing at the upcoming inauguration for President-elect Donald Trump, an act, according to Behar, contradicts Underwood’s love for country, as reported in the New York Post.
“She says ‘I love our country.’ How do you love your country and support and normalize somebody who was a convicted felon who really wants to destroy the country, in my opinion?” Behar said. “I don’t understand how you say you love your country at the same time that you normalize this convicted felon.”
Underwood will sing “America the Beautiful” at the inauguration Jan. 20.
Not all of Behar’s co-hosts agreed with her assessment, including Alyssa Farah Griffin, the sole Republican on the panel.
Griffin said she knows many people who both love America and voted for Trump on Nov. 5.
“I would not be the person to say don’t do it, because I believe in free speech and everything about it. I personally would not do it. No one’s asked me, but that’s another story,” Behar said.
Behar added she would never perform at a Trump inauguration.
Whoopi Goldberg, another co-host, said she respected Underwood’s decision to perform.
“People do what they do for whatever reasons. It’s like Joe and Mika,” Goldberg said. “They felt that’s what they needed to do and I got to stand behind them, you know and I stand behind her.”
Goldberg was talking about MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski’s meeting with Trump after the election.
Former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck clapped back at Behar for criticizing Underwood.
She started by posting on X.
“That @TheView @JoyVBehar needs to simmer down off my friend,” Hasselbeck wrote. She later posting about what shows she would go to talk about Behar “calling Carrie Underwood Un-American,” which Behar never did.
One answer to that question was appearing on Sean Hannity’s Fox Newsprogram Tuesday night.
“When those comments got passed around, even Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t agree with the outlandish remark of Joy Behar,” Hasselbeck said.
“She wants us to believe that [about] Carrie Underwood, who won ‘American Idol’ by American votes, who had an album and tour called All-American Girl, who actually has spent more time on USO tours, serving and helping and donating money to our nation’s finest, our military, their families and our veterans – is about to perform ‘America the Beautiful’ at the historic event of the inauguration of the President of the United States of America.”
Hasselbeck called Behar selfish for linking her name with Underwood for publicity’s sake.
“She wants to attach her name to Carrie Underwood’s name so that she maintains relevance because they know the ship is sinking,” Hasselbeck said.
The conservative commentator continued by saying Behar’s “dysmorphic lie” needs to be stopped.
“That’s what we’re doing tonight. We’re actually being truth bearers, because what we know to be true is that it’s actually more un-American to call someone un-American for exercising their American rights,” Hasselbeck said.
Hasselbeck also asked Behar, “Is every person that shows up on Inauguration Day, from security to custodial staff, un-American? Is that what Joy is saying?”
