Former Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday is set to appear for her first interview since the 2024 election with Stephen Colbert, whose late night program is about to be taken off the air.

Harris’ interview comes just one day after she announced that she will not run to become governor of California and that she is releasing a new book about her short-lived presidential campaign titled, “107 Days.” She is making her first post-election appearance on “Late Night with Stephen Colbert,” which is currently in its final season due to the economic pressures facing CBS.

CBS executives said that the cancellation of Colbert’s program in May 2026 is solely a “financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” according to Variety. Colbert’s program caused the network to lose between $40 and $50 million in 2024, and executives believed they were on track to lose even more money throughout the upcoming year.

“We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘The Late Show’ franchise’ in May of 2026,” CBS executives said in a statement. ““We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television. This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

The cancellation also came as speculation emerged that Colbert and Jon Stewart, who hosts a weekly broadcast of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” may face scrutiny from executives at SkyDance Media for their repeated jabs against President Donald Trump, Variety reported. David Ellison, the leader of SkyDance, received praise from Trump as his company is set to acquire and merge with Paramount Global, the parent company of both CBS and Comedy Central.

CBS continues to face financial troubles since they settled a lawsuit with Trump over the editing of a “60 Minutes” interview with Harris in October 2024. Paramount agreed to pay $16 million toward the president’s future presidential library on July 2, and later agreed to pay another $20 million on July 22.

Harris’ political future still remains up in the air since her loss to Trump in the 2024 election. Democratic donors appeared unenthused by the prospect of Harris entering the California gubernatorial race.

Political strategists have also opposed Harris running for governor or in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, particularly pointing to her campaign spending $1.5 billion that included celebrity appearances and interviews.

Former Democratic National Committee fundraiser Lindy Li told NewsNation during a Nov. 26, 2024, interview that she was “stunned” by Harris and her campaign’s lack of accountability for the massive spending, while Democratic donor John Morgan argued that the campaign spending should end Harris’ political career.
