Jimmy Kimmel asked the one question Doug Emhoff probably thought he’d never been asked.
“What was your reaction when your wife turned Black? Were you surprised?” Kimmel asked the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday’s on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
“It’s so interesting — all that stuff, it’s a distraction though. Like we can joke about it, but it’s literally a distraction,” Emhoff said, as reported by The Hill.
“So all the insults, all the things coming at her, coming at me, coming at our family, it’s literally just a distraction from what they’re trying to do,” he continued.
The unusual question is rooted in a statement made by former President Donald Trump at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in July.
Trump answered a question about Harris being a “DEI hire” by stating, “She was always of Indian heritage. And she was only promoting Indian heritage.”
“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black. And now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said. “So I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she Black?”
He later said Harris “was Indian all the way then all of a sudden she made a turn” and “became a Black person.”
