The abortion pill is not medicine. It is a dangerous drug designed to end the life of an innocent human child, and as new evidence shows, it’s gravely harming the women it claims to help.
A new, unprecedented study from the Ethics and Public Policy Center has uncovered what the abortion industry does not want you to know: over 10 percent of women who take the abortion pill experience serious, sometimes life-threatening complications. That’s more than one in ten women suffering from sepsis, hemorrhage, emergency surgery, or hospitalization alone, often without medical supervision.
This study analyzed 865,727 mifepristone abortions from 2017 to 2023, using real-world insurance claims data. It dwarfs the tightly controlled clinical trials that the FDA and abortion pill manufacturers rely on, which involved only 30,966 participants and reported a sanitized adverse event rate of less than 0.5 percent. According to this study, the actual rate is 22 times higher.
The abortion pill is not safe. It never has been. When the FDA first approved mifepristone in 2000, it did so by redefining pregnancy itself as a “serious or life-threatening illness.” That grotesque lie allowed it to be fast-tracked through the approval process—something usually reserved for drugs treating terminal diseases. And since then, the abortion pill has led to the deaths of 7.5 million preborn children. It is also linked to the deaths of at least 36 women and has harmed countless others.
Yet, the FDA has systematically removed even the most basic safety requirements, putting abortion ideology over women’s lives. What were those requirements?
Originally, the FDA mandated:
- Three in-person visits to a doctor
- That only physicians could prescribe the drug
- Drugs must be administered in a clinic or hospital, not at home.
- Prescribers should be trained to assess gestational age and screen for ectopic pregnancy.
- Any adverse events should be reported to the FDA.
These regulations were dismantled under the Obama and Biden administrations. Today, a woman can obtain mifepristone after a brief online appointment, often with someone who may not even be a licensed physician. Dangerous abortion drugs are shipped directly to her doorstep, leaving her to face severe bleeding, infection, and even life-threatening complications alone in her bathroom. Her baby is often born dead in the toilet. There is no guarantee of follow-up care, and doctors are only required to report complications if the woman dies.
This is not healthcare. It is reckless abandonment, sanctioned by a derelict FDA that has betrayed its duty to protect human life.
Let’s be clear. Even if the abortion pill harmed zero women, it would still be gravely unjust. Because every time it works as intended, a child is killed. A son or daughter—living, growing, with a beating heart—is poisoned, starved, and flushed out of the womb. That is the goal of the abortion pill. That is its function. It ends a human life.
That is why this drug must not just be regulated. It must be banned.
