A Maryland lawyer faced felony assault charges on Tuesday after he allegedly spat on National Guard personnel Friday.

According to charging documents and a statement by Amtrak Police Sergeant Robert Underwood, two South Carolina National Guard personnel were patrolling near Union Station when Scott J. Pichon rode up to them on a Lime scooter, WUSA reported. Underwood reported hearing what sounded like Pichon coughing up mucus before witnessing him spit on the National Guard.

Pichon was arrested Tuesday on a federal warrant on the felony charges. United States Magistrate Judge G. Michael Harvey released him without bail following a court appearance, according to WUSA.

United States Attorney Jeanine Pirro of the District of Columbia warned in an Aug. 13 post on X that those who assaulted cops would be charged, mentioning a person who was arrested after throwing a Subway sandwich at police. Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed a day later that the man arrested after he allegedly threw a Subway sandwich at police officers was a Department of Justice employee.

Since Trump announced a federal takeover of Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to combat crime in the district on Aug.11, National Guard troops and federal law enforcement personnel have been carrying out patrols in the nation’s capital. Since Trump launched the crackdown in the nation’s capital, 1,178 arrests have been made and 123 guns have been seized, Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on X on Wednesday.

Crime in the district received national attention after Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer Edward Coristine, known by the moniker “Big Balls,” was injured by a mob when he intervened to prevent a carjacking in August, days before Trump announced the takeover.

Other crimes that drew coverage included the murder of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, an intern for Republican Rep. Ron Estes of Kansas, who was fatally shot on June 30, an attack in which two employees of the Israeli Embassy were killed in May and an incident where Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota was assaulted in her apartment in February 2023.
