A Republican Louisiana senator suggested that former President Donald Trump should withdraw from the 2024 Republican presidential race.
Republican Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy told CNN host Kasie Hunt on Sunday’s “State of the Union,” he thinks Trump “will lose” to President Joe Biden if he ends up being the Republican nominee for the 2024 general election.
“I think so,” Cassidy told Hunt in response to her asking whether he thinks the former president should drop out of the race.
Republican Senator Bill Cassidy says Jack Smith has a “slam dunk” case against Donald Trump, calls on Trump to drop out of the race, but then says he’d vote for Trump if he’s the Republican nominee.

The decision on whether or not to drop out of the race is ultimately up to Trump, Cassidy pointed out to Hunt.
“I mean, you’re just asking me my opinion,” Cassidy said. “He will lose to Joe Biden if you look at the current polls. I’m a Republican. I think any Republican on that stage in Milwaukee will do a better job than Joe Biden. And so, I want one of them to win.”
Cassidy argued that if Trump ends up winning the nomination but can’t defeat Biden in the general election, the U.S. would have “four more years of policies which led to very high inflation” and to a “loss of purchasing power.”
Trump is currently facing 91 charges after being indicted four times. Cassidy noted the charges from Special Counsel Jack Smith relating to mishandling classified documents, seem like a “slam dunk” to him.
“They have a tape recording of him speaking of it. If that is proven, then we may have a candidate for president who has been convicted of a crime,” Cassidy said. “I think Joe Biden needs to be replaced, but I don’t think Americans will vote for someone who has been convicted.”
When asked by Hunt whether Cassidy would vote for Biden or Trump in the general election, Cassidy noted that he would “vote for a Republican.”
