The majority of U.S. adults believe the United Nations (UN) is not doing a good job, according to a Gallup poll released late Sunday — days before its general debate is set to open.

The latest Gallup poll found that 63% of Americans said they think the UN is doing a “poor” job. Meanwhile, just 32% said they felt the UN was doing a “good” job, according to the survey.

Still, 60% of the survey’s respondents said they see the UN as necessary today, while 38% disagreed, according to the poll. A slightly smaller share of respondents presently consider the UN necessary than in Gallup polls between 2005 and 2019, when about two-thirds of respondents held this view, according to the polling company.

Fifty-nine percent of Republicans said they think the UN does not play a necessary role, while just 19% of Democrats said the same, the poll found.

Additionally, 48% of Democrats said they believe the UN is doing a “poor” job, while 46% said the UN is doing a “good” job, according to the poll. In comparison, 75% of Republicans said they disapprove of the UN’s job performance, while just 21% said the international organization was doing a “good” job, the survey found.

The Gallup survey’s release comes ahead of the UN’s 80th annual General Assembly general debate which kicks off Tuesday.

The Senate on Friday confirmed Mike Waltz, who formerly served as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, to be the U.S. ambassador to the UN. Trump notably announced in July that he was once again withdrawing the U.S. from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), partly over concerns of left-leaning bias.

The Gallup poll’s results are based on telephone interviews conducted by ReconMR from Aug. 1 to 20, with a random sample of 1,094 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. All reported margins of sampling error include computed design effects for weighting.
