Political analyst Mark Halperin criticized Democrats on Tuesday for their refusal to stand when President Donald Trump honored a 13-year-old boy with cancer during his congressional address.
Trump announced during the joint session that D.J. Daniel, who has been sworn in by more than 900 police departments throughout the nation, would be made an honorary Secret Service agent. Halperin, on a special edition of “2WAY TONIGHT,” argued that Democrats’ attacks on Trump lose credibility when they act in such an “aberrant” manner.

“The Democrats’ criticism of Donald Trump — that he engages in aberrant and disgusting behavior — is a fair critique, and you could cite a million examples for it,” Halperin said. “To not stand for that little boy is aberrant and disgusting behavior. So not only do they lose the high ground, but they shock the conscience, I hope, of many Democrats, and I know some Democrats who texted me.”
“I understand the theatrics, maybe caught up in the moment, but for no Democrat to stand, applaud and turn to his or her colleagues and say, like, ‘Come on,’ including the leaders, is aberrant and disgusting,” he continued. “And again, they want to say that Donald Trump has destroyed America by taking his aberrant and disgusting behavior and imposing it on America. They did it tonight … He’s the president, he’s in charge, etc., but they knew what was happening in the chamber. And they had to have read the list of people who were coming. So it’s not great.”
Trump also said during his address that Daniel had survived for six years despite being informed that he had less than five months left to live.
“Since that time, D.J. and his dad have been on a quest to make his dream come true. And D.J. has been sworn in as an honorary law enforcement officer actually a number of times. The police love him. The police departments love him,” Trump said. “And tonight, D.J., we are going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service Director Sean Curran to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service.”
Video footage showed Democrats staying seated while Republicans rose and applauded, with some chanting, “D.J.” as Curran gave Daniel credentials and got a hug from the 13-year-old.
Moreover, MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace launched into a diatribe regarding the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot on Tuesday while discussing Trump honoring Daniel.
“I hope he never has to defend the United States Capitol against Donald Trump’s supporters, and if he does, I hope he isn’t one of the six who loses his life to suicide, and I hope he isn’t one who has to testify against the people who carried out acts of seditious conspiracy and then lived to see Donald Trump pardon those people,” she said.
