Maryland Governor to Withhold Funds for Abortion Training

ANNAPOLIS, MD - AUGUST 05: Maryland Governor Larry Hogan holds a news conference on the state's Covid-19 situation, at the Maryland State Capitol on August 5, 2021 in Annapolis, Maryland. With the Delta variant of COVID-19 on the rise, Governor Hogan announced that state employees working in congregate living facilities must show proof of vaccination by September 1. He also called on the private operators of 227 nursing homes in Maryland to take similar steps. (Drew Angerer/Getty Images)

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) will withhold $3.5 million in funding for training for abortion providers, according to a report.

The Washington Post noted the new abortion provider training program will effectively be delayed for a year.

The outlet explained Democratic state lawmakers struck a separate budget deal that put aside $3.5 million for the training to begin in July.

However, the governor is not required to honor deals like that under the Maryland constitution.

The Post pointed out Hogan is “barred from spending that money on anything besides abortion training, but he can use his discretion on whether to spend it at all.”

Hogan spokesman Michael Ricci told the outlet the governor would not be spending it and will issue a version of the budget that “reflects the bipartisan agreement with legislative leaders, and includes $2 billion for their priorities.”

Last month, Maryland lawmakers voted to override Hogan’s veto of a bill that would expand access to abortions and require health insurers to cover the cost of the abortion, as Axios reported.

He vetoed the law, saying it “endangers the health and lives of women by allowing non-physicians” to perform the procedures.

Hogan added, “The only impact that this bill would have on women’s reproductive rights would be to set back standards for women’s health care and safety.”

The report comes just days after Politico published a draft Supreme Court opinion showing it will overturn Roe v. Wade.

Fox News reported liberal groups have called on protesters to visit Supreme Court justices’ homes.

“Our 6-3 extremist Supreme Court routinely issues rulings that hurt women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights,” the group’s website states.

It continues, “We must rise up to force accountability using a diversity of tactics.”

Chief Justice John Roberts called the leak of a memo a “betrayal of the confidences of the Court.”

Additionally, Roberts directed the marshal of the court to launch an investigation into the leak.
