White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows is not convinced President Donald Trump is attempting to undermine confidence Americans have in voting by mail.

Host of CBS’s “Face the Nation” Margaret Brennan noted an estimated 80 million Americans will vote by mail in the upcoming presidential election.

She asked Meadows why Trump is publicly undermining confidence in the system.

“I don’t know that he is publicly undermining confidence as much as he is stating the facts,” Meadows said.

Brennan challenged Meadows by reiterating Trump is calling mail-in voting a scam.

“Well, we’ve got states that actually are doing things that you would qualify as a scam when you start to look at allowing mail-in ballots to come in seven, nine days after November 3rd, changing the laws through judges that actually are not legislators,” Meadows said.

Meadows stressed the main priority should be to protect the ballot process to prevent a situation “ripe with fraud.”

He went on to defend Trump’s criticism of voting by mail.

“He’s right to highlight it. The very fact that we’re talking about it this morning is a good thing that hopefully all states will look at making sure that they make sure that that ballot is sacred,” Meadows said.

His comments come just days after he slammed Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray for suggesting there has been no “coordinated national voter fraud effort” by mail in previous elections, as IJR previously reported.

“With all due respect to Director Wray, he has a hard time finding emails in his own FBI let alone figuring out whether there is any kind of voter fraud,” Meadows said during an interview with CBS.

Trump doubled down on his criticism of mail-in ballots during an interview on Fox News Radio on Thursday and called them “a horror show,” as IJR previously reported.
