The 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship ended in fireworks — and not the celebratory kind.
Miami Hurricanes running back Mark Fletcher Jr., who racked up 112 yards and two touchdowns in a standout performance, was caught on live television throwing a punch at Indiana Hoosiers defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker moments after the final whistle.
As the ESPN cameras rolled, Fletcher was seen walking off the field when a heated exchange of words with Tucker escalated. In a moment of frustration, Fletcher stepped toward Tucker and swung. The altercation didn’t spiral further, thanks to quick intervention by staffers who held Fletcher back before things got worse.
It was a jarring end to what had been a heroic effort by Fletcher, who almost single-handedly pulled the Hurricanes back into the game. With Miami down at halftime, Fletcher opened the third quarter with a blistering 57-yard touchdown run that ignited Hard Rock Stadium. Then, in the fourth, he punched in a gritty 3-yard touchdown that brought the ‘Canes within striking distance.
Way to help erase the stigma of fans thinking Miami is school with a bunch of thugs on a night that could’ve shifted that narrative win or lose. Mark Fletcher Jr. still swings at Indiana’s Tyrique Tucker after the game #NationalChampionship #CFBPlayoff pic.twitter.com/XnRa4nDCgO

But the comeback fell short.
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza’s diving touchdown put the Hoosiers up by 10 with just over nine minutes remaining, and Miami’s final hopes were dashed when QB Carson Beck tossed a late interception, sealing the Hoosiers’ 27-21 victory.
Tucker, who had helped anchor Indiana’s defensive line, was seen celebrating with teammates in the aftermath of the win, while Fletcher’s night ended under a cloud of controversy despite his undeniable dominance on the field.

The trash talk? The punch? What was said between the two players remains unknown. But in a game that will be remembered for its drama, Fletcher’s late-game outburst may become the unfortunate headline that overshadows an otherwise electric performance.
The Hurricanes leave with heartbreak. The Hoosiers leave with history. And Mark Fletcher Jr. leaves with questions swirling around what should’ve been a night defined by glory — not grief.
