Actress Bette Midler is raising some eyebrows after she posted a message encouraging a massive turnout in the 2022 midterm elections.
On Wednesday, Midler shared a tweet with a colored background meant to resemble the Ukrainian flag.
It had a caption that read, “We need to show up for the 2022 midterms as if we were Ukrainians.”

Her comment comes more than a month into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces have put up stiffer resistance than was expected.
However, Midler’s call to action sparked some questions on Twitter:
Conservative podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey asked, “What does this even mean?”

Democrats currently hold narrow majorities in the House and Senate.
In the House, they have a 221-209 majority.
The Council on Foreign Relations notes, “Going back to Harry Truman’s presidency, the president’s party has lost, on average, twenty-nine House seats in each president’s first midterm election.”
If Republicans picked up half of that average in November, they still would win control of the lower chamber.
Democrats currently control the Senate, which is split 50-50, because Vice President Kamala Harris can cast tie-breaking votes.
If Republicans hold every seat in the Senate and flip just one seat, they would regain control of the chamber.
According to RealClearPolitics’ average of polls, Republicans have a 3.6 point advantage on the question of which party they want to have control of Congress.
