A Nevada ballot measure that would require voter identification is projected to pass, paving the way for amending the state constitution, according to multiple reports.

Nevada’s Question 7 proposed requiring voters to present photo identification when voting in-person or to supply personal information like a driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number when voting by mail.

The initiative passed with an overwhelming majority. If the initiative passes again in 2026, the state constitution will be amended.

Most states expect voters to present some form of identification before casting a ballot. Nevada was one of just 14 states, along with Washington, D.C., that did not require any documents verifying identity during the 2024 election, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The Nevada Secretary of State’s Office confirmed in July that the initiative gained enough signatures to be placed on the 2024 ballot.

In May, the Nevada Supreme Court allowed the initiative to move forward after it was challenged by a member of the left-wing immigrant advocacy group Make The Road Nevada.

Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo chaired the PAC launched to pass the initiative, the Nevada Voter ID Coalition. Lombardo’s previous efforts to have a voter identification bill passed failed to gain support in the Democrat-controlled state legislature, the Nevada Independent reported in 2023.

The PAC opposing the initiative, the Nevada Voter Freedom Alliance, was launched by the progressive organization Battle Born Progress. It is also backed by organizations like Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada and the left-wing group Mi Familia Vota.
