NFL player Russell Gage Jr. was taken to the hospital after suffering a scary hit on the field.

During a matchup against the Dallas Cowboys Monday night, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady went to throw Gage a pass down the field when the receiver was hit in the area of his back and neck.

The medical staff rushed onto the field to help Gage after he struggled to get back up.

ESPN noted players from both teams took a knee and prayed as Gage was being helped.

“They took him to the hospital,” Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said.

He added, “Right now, he has a concussion. They’re also testing him for potential neck injuries.”

Tampa Bay inside linebacker Lavonte David explained it was “really tough — especially with what happened a couple weeks ago,” appearing to be referencing Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s collapse on the field during a game.

He continued, “Russ is a great dude off the field and a great guy on the field. We definitely hope he’s well. He was moving and stuff like that; that was a good sign. Definitely hope he’s OK.”

Tampa Bay tight end Cam Brate said, “You hate to see a guy go down like that, especially with the game being kind of out of reach at that point. It’s really hard to see your teammate like that. We’re all thinking about Russ and hope he’s doing well. Yeah, it’s tough.”

Earlier this month, Hamlin was released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and transferred to a hospital in the Buffalo area after suffering a cardiac arrest.

“Dr. [Timothy] Pritts and I have spoken extensively with his air team in Buffalo, and I can confirm that he’s doing well and this is the beginning of the next stage of his recovery. … Since our last update to you, Damar Hamlin has met a number of key milestones on his journey to recovery,” Dr. William Knight said at the time.

Hamlin also took to Twitter to share he was heading home to Buffalo.

“Watching the world come together around me on Sunday was truly an amazing feeling,” Hamlin tweeted.

Headed home to Buffalo today with a lot of love on my heart. 🫶🏾

The same love you all have shown me is the same love that I plan to put back into the world n more.

He added, “The same love you all have shown me is the same love that I plan to put back into the world n more.”

The incident with Hamlin led several NFL players to engage in prayer circles, Fox News noted.
