The Department of Government Efficiency no longer exists.

The department, whose mission was to cut federal excess, was led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk during his time at the White House, per Mediaite.

According to a “Reuters”report on Sunday, the department was closed down by the Trump administration.

“That doesn’t exist,” office of personnel management (OPM) director Scott Kupor told “Reuters” earlier this month.

Kupor continued, stating DOGE was no longer a “centralized entity,” but more of an idea now.

The agency was set up in January and made cuts along the way, including shrink federal agencies, cuting their budgets or redirecting their work to Trump priorities.

The OPM has taken over many of DOGE’s functions, according to Kupor

Musk said the department’s mission was to significantly reduce the “tyranny of the bureaucracy.” To do so meant eliminating a massive amount of government spending.

“If the deficit is not brought under control, America will go bankrupt,” Musk told Sean Hannity, during a joint interview with Trump on Fox News in February.

DOGE’s goal was to cut $1 trillion to $2 trillion in annual spending. The department cut about $150 billion by the time Musk left in late May.

Should the closure of DOGE be viewed positively or negatively?

DOGE’s success came at a price for Musk.

There were number of incidents where Tesla cars were attacked and damaged.

Tesla’s stock price also decreased from $379 per share to $225 per share by mid-March.

The stock has since rebounded and is trading at around $391 per share.

While Musk departed DOGE on good terms, his relationship with Yrump turned sour over the late sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein’s files.

“Elon gave an incredible service,” Trump said during Musk’s exit. “[There’s] Nobody like him, and he had to go through the slings and arrows, which is a shame, because he’s an incredible patriot.”

The pair was seen talking

They appear to have patched things up recently, though; the pair were seen talking at Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in September. Musk also was at the White House for an event honoring Saudi leader Mohammed bin Salman last week.

DOGE’s planned termination was set for July 4, 2026.
